As you plan your meals, keep in mind these tips from our reinsurance company, Grinnell Mutual, for a safer and happier Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Limit how many cooks can be in the kitchen<\/b>. \u201cPreparing a large meal, you can have congestion in the kitchen at Thanksgiving. All the burners are going, the oven is going, and hot foods and liquids are coming off the stove,\u201d said David Miller, assistant vice president of Special Investigations at Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company. \u201cIf you\u2019re not paying attention, you could get burned.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><b>Stand by your pan<\/b>. \u201cBe cautious. Do not have the burners on high and leave them unattended,\u201d said Miller. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grinnellmutual.com\/content\/front-porch-blog\/Stand-by-your-pan-to-prevent-kitchen-fires\">Read more about kitchen fires<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li><b>Keep hot liquids away from the counter and table edges<\/b>. Water or other liquids heated to 140 degrees Fahrenheit can cause a third degree burn in as little as five seconds, according to a report from the American Burn Association. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grinnellmutual.com\/about-us\/media-center\/Home-cooking-scald-free-Preventing-scalds-in-your-home\">Read more about how you can prevent scalds in your home<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li><b>Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen<\/b>. \u201cIf there is a fire in your home, you want to get people outside as quickly as possible,\u201d said Miller. \u201cIf you believe you can safely fight the fire with a fire extinguisher then do that. Next thing you know, you have a fire that gets sucked up into the exhaust fan and you\u2019ve got problems,\u201d said Miller. Make sure well-traveled walking paths in your home are free of throw rugs, extension cords, and other clutter. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grinnellmutual.com\/content\/front-porch-blog\/Finding-and-fixing-hazards-at-home-key-to-preventing-falls-for-older-adults\">Read more about preventing falls at home<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li><b>Clean sidewalks, steps, and driveways<\/b>. \u201cIf it looks like communities will have a white Thanksgiving,\u201d said Miller. \u201cUse sand, salt, or ice melt to reduce slip and fall hazards.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><b>Light the path<\/b>. The meal may begin during the day, but end after dusk.
