Understandably so, since chickens\u00a0are easy, inexpensive\u00a0pets with nutritional benefits for country and urban folks alike. Yet a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tmj4.com\/news\/local-news\/wisconsinites-among-those-infected-with-salmonella\" target=\"_blank\">recent outbreak of Human Salmonella infections<\/a> in seven states, including Wisconsin, is cause for taking\u00a0extra care when managing your backyard flock.<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has several <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/features\/salmonellapoultry\/\" target=\"_blank\">helpful articles<\/a> related to this outbreak and keeping backyard poultry. Here are its suggestions for reducing the chance of acquiring Salmonella from your flock:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Always wash your hands with soap and water right after touching live poultry or anything in the area where they live and roam.<\/li>\n<li>Adults should supervise hand washing for young children.<\/li>\n<li>Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not readily available.<\/li>\n<li>Do not let live poultry inside the house, in bathrooms, or especially in areas where food or drink is prepared, served, or stored.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t let children younger than 5 years, adults older than 65, and people with weakened immune systems handle or touch chicks, ducklings, or other live poultry.<\/li>\n<li>If you collect eggs from the hens, thoroughly cook them.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t eat or drink in the area where the birds live or roam.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid kissing your birds or snuggling them, then touching your mouth.<\/li>\n<li>Stay outdoors when cleaning any equipment or materials used to raise or care for live poultry, such as cages or feed or water containers.<\/li>\n<li>Buy birds from hatcheries that participate in the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Poultry Improvement Plan (USDA-NPIP) U.S. voluntary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gpo.gov\/fdsys\/pkg\/FR-2014-07-09\/pdf\/2014-16037.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Salmonella Monitoring Program[279 KB]<\/a>.
